A site survey is beneficial in several ways.
Firstly, if you want to want to have a diesel generator (as well as a gas generator or any other type) you will need a site survey. This is to ensure that there is a suitable location not only from your perspective but also a legal on. In addition, the diesel generators location will affect how much cabling, etc. is required.
If you require a larger UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) a site survey will allow for the location of a suitable room, as well as suitable space for any UPS Batteries that may be required. Again depending on the location, the survey allows for the amount of cabling to be determined.
